NFL Power Rankings (9/27/18)
1) Los Angeles Rams (3-0)
Last Week Ranking: 2
Last Game: beat L.A. Chargers 35-23
Next Game: vs. Minnesota (TNF)
Rams get their first real test of the year against a talented Vikings team coming off an embarrassing loss.
2) Kansas City Chiefs (3-0)
Last Week Ranking: 3
Last Game: beat San Francisco 38-27
Next Game: at Denver (MNF)
The rise of Patrick Mahomes II continues. He leads the league in touchdown passes with thirteen in his first three starts, breaking the record of twelve set by Peyton Manning.
3) Philadelphia Eagles (2-1)
Last Week Ranking: 10
Last Game: beat Indianapolis 20-16
Next Game: at Tennessee
Carson Wentz was sharp in his return (25 of 27 for 255 yards, TD, INT, lost fumble) but it was the Eagles stout defense (209 total yards allowed) that won the game.
4) Jacksonville Jaguars (2-1)
Last Week Ranking: 1
Last Game: lost to Tennessee 9-6
Next Game: vs. N.Y. Jets
The Jags running attack hasn't scored a rushing touchdown yet this season. Leonard Fournette, please get well soon.
5) New Orleans Saints (2-1)
Last Week Ranking: 15
Last Game: beat Atlanta 43-37 in OT
Next Game: at N.Y. Giants
Their problems in the secondary must be addressed if they're going to survive what is suddenly a division full of high flying teams.
6) Tampa Bay Buccaneers (2-1)
Last Week Ranking: 4
Last Game: lost to Pittsburgh 30-27
Next Game: at Chicago
Jameis Winston was eligible to return to the Buccaneers on Tuesday, but I'd be surprised if he starts against the Bears. They have a bye in week five and should use that time to assess QB situation.
7) Carolina Panthers (2-1)
Last Week Ranking: 14
Last Game: beat Cincinnati 31-21
Next Game: Bye Week
Christian McCaffrey's huge day (28 carries, 184 yards) could mean a more diverse offense as the Panthers head into the bye week.
8) Minnesota Vikings (1-1-1)
Last Week Ranking: 5
Last Game: lost to Buffalo 27-6
Next Game: at L.A. Rams (TNF)
A stunning head-scratcher of a loss. The Vikings have no excuse. They overlooked the Bills and it came back to bite them in the butt.
9) New England Patriots (1-2)
Last Week Ranking: 6
Last Game: lost to Detroit 26-10
Next Game: vs. Miami
The Patriots had 12 first downs compared to Detroit's 24 and were only 2 of 9 on third down. Julian Edelman's return from suspension couldn't come at a better time.
10) Miami Dolphins (3-0)
Last Week Ranking: 12
Last Game: beat Oakland 28-20
Next Game: at New England
If the faceless Dolphins want to make a name for themselves, sending the Patriots to their third straight loss would be a big start.
11) Green Bay Packers (1-1-1)
Last Week Ranking: 7
Last Game: lost to Washington 31-17
Next Game: vs. Buffalo
As ridiculous the calls against him have been, Clay Matthews would be wise to look for the strip sack the way Von Miller or Khalil Mack do.
12) Cincinnati Bengals (2-1)
Last Week Ranking: 8
Last Game: lost to Carolina 31-21
Next Game: at Atlanta
Bengals safety Shawn Williams got ejected for the second time in three games.
13) Atlanta Falcons (1-2)
Last Week Ranking: 11
Last Game: lost to New Orleans 43-37 in OT
Next Game: vs. Cincinnati
The Falcons are a much better team than their record indicates. The fast start from rookie WR Calvin Ridley will make this offense even harder to stop as the year progresses.
14) Baltimore Ravens (2-1)
Last Week Ranking: 17
Last Game: beat Denver 27-14
Next Game: at Pittsburgh
Ravens hit a tough stretch in their schedule with four out of five games on the road against Pittsburgh, a resurgent Browns team, and a tough Titans team.
15) Chicago Bears (2-1)
Last Week Ranking: 16
Last Game: beat Arizona 16-14
Next Game: vs. Tampa Bay
Are the Monsters of the Midway back? Chicago is 5th in total defense and 2nd against the run.
16) Tennessee Titans (2-1)
Last Week Ranking: 18
Last Game: beat Jacksonville 9-6
Next Game: vs. Philadelphia
The Titans might be the most boring team in the league. Tough, solid everywhere, weird uniforms, but Mike Vrabel's team is leading the AFC South.
17) Washington Redskins (2-1)
Last Week Ranking: 25
Last Game: beat Green Bay 31-17
Next Game: Bye Week
I guess Adrian Peterson was right when he said he had plenty left in the tank. He's fifth in rushing with 236 yards.
18) Denver Broncos (2-1)
Last Week Ranking: 9
Last Game: lost to Baltimore 27-14
Next Game: vs. Kansas City (MNF)
Broncos pass protection came undone leading to a tough day for Case Keenum.
19) Pittsburgh Steelers (1-1-1)
Last Week Ranking: 21
Last Game: beat Tampa Bay
Next Game: vs. Baltimore
They won a must-win game, if there's such a thing this early in the season. But that defense is a major concern.
20) Los Angeles Chargers (1-2)
Last Week Ranking: 13
Last Game: lost to L.A. Rams
Next Game: vs. San Francisco
You would think that with all the special teams gaffes over the years that the Chargers would address the problems, but this is a team run by Dean Spanos. The word "innovative" isn't in his vocabulary.
21) Seattle Seahawks (1-2)
Last Week Ranking: 24
Last Game: beat Dallas 24-13
Next Game: at Arizona
Earl Thomas took a bow toward the Dallas bench after his second interception of the game. Was that a not-so-subtle way of telling the Cowboys, "You too can have this Pro Bowl safety for $20M a year?"
22) Cleveland Browns (1-1-1)
Last Week Ranking: 27
Last Game: beat N.Y. Jets 21-17
Next Game: at Oakland
Lost among the Baker Mayfield headlines is how well fellow rookie CB Denzel Ward is playing.
23) Detroit Lions (1-2)
Last Week Ranking: 29
Last Game: beat New England 26-10
Next Game: at Dallas
Kerryon Johnson ran for 101 yards on 16 carries making him the first Lion to rush over 100 yards in a game since 2013.
24) Dallas Cowboys (1-2)
Last Week Ranking: 22
Last Game: lost to Seattle 24-13
Next Game: vs. Detroit
Jerry Jones told a Dallas radio station that NFL football needs to be played differently from any other level. In short, roughing the QB penalties will lessen. Because as we know, whatever Jerrah wants, Jerrah gets.
25) New York Giants (1-2)
Last Week Ranking: 28
Last Game: beat Houston 27-22
Next Game: vs. New Orleans
Saquan Barkley is impressive, even behind a leaky offensive line.
26) Indianapolis Colts (1-2)
Last Week Ranking: 23
Last Game: lost to Philadelphia 20-16
Next Game: vs. Houston Colts (1-2)
Putting in Jacoby Brissett at the end of the game to throw a long Hail Mary pass tells us everything about the state of Andrew Luck's shoulder
27) Houston Texans (0-3)
Last Week Ranking: 26
Last Game: lost to N.Y. Giants 27-22
Next Game: at Indianapolis
The Texans have lost all three of their games by a combined 15 points. They aren't far off.
28) San Francisco 49ers (1-2)
Last Week Ranking: 19
Last Game: lost to Kansas City
Next Game: at L.A. Chargers
It's up to C.J. Beathard now with Jimmy Garappolo out. Time to start checking out next year's draft prospects.
29) Buffalo Bills (1-2)
Last Week Ranking: 32
Last Game: beat Minnesota 27-6
Next Game: at Green Bay
That was a hell of an athletic move, Josh Allen. But I think I can speak for your coaches when I say, "SLIDE!"
30) New York Jets (1-2)
Last Week Ranking: 20
Last Game: lost to Cleveland 21-17
Next Game: at Jacksonville
Message to Isaiah Crowell: You're not good enough to get away with something as stupid as that. Not. Even. Close.
31) Oakland Raiders (0-3)
Last Week Ranking: 30
Last Game: lost to Miami 28-20
Next Game: vs. Cleveland
The Raiders have outscored opponents in the first half this season 35-17. But apparently, they don't know games are 60 minutes long. They been outscored in the second half 64-17 and 37-3 in the fourth quarter.
32) Arizona Cardinals (0-3)
Last Week Ranking: 31
Last Game: lost to Chicago 16-14
Next Game: vs. Seattle
Josh Rosen will be the new starter at QB. And the way it's going with the Cardinals, he won't be the only one moving off the bench.
